Master Bedroom Decorating: Create Your Personal Retreat

Decorating your master bedroom is often overlooked. Why do we always seem to save our decorating time and dollars for the public spaces in our homes like the living and dining rooms, and ignore the master bedroom?  This important room always seems to be the dumping ground for castoff furniture or additional storage space for everything else in the home.  Whether you are on a strict budget or have money to burn, Hickory Furniture Mart has several bedroom furniture stores that make it possible to have a beautiful and comfortable master bedroom.

A master bedroom should provide a comfortable and quiet spot to read, relax and escape the daily routine of life.  Here’s a quick checklist of items that will assist you in rearranging your master bedroom:

  • First and foremost, a comfortable mattress is a must.  Consider your price range and explore different options that work best for you, like pillow top and memory foam.
  • Your bed is more than just a mattress. Choose the very best linens your budget will allow for the ultimate good night’s sleep.
  • Decorative linens such as comforters, bed skirts and shams can be found in any pattern and color you desire from the many fabric manufacturers at the Mart.
  • Lighting is important.  Find a balance between overhead lighting and bedside lamps to provide the best overall lighting. Don’t forget ambient lighting which can add character to your master bedroom.
  • If space allows, add a comfortable reading chair and ottoman. At the very least, place a bench at the foot of the bed to provide a spot to sit while tying your shoes or to catch all the decorative pillows when you turn the bed back at night.
  • Storage is an important element in bedroom design. Nightstands will catch the book, reading glasses and other paraphernalia you may need at hand.  Dressers and chests of drawers obviously hold clothing, and an armoire can hide the TV and other electronics as well as also store extra linens, books or anything else you might have.
  • Don’t forget to personalize this very personal space.  Display important photos and other treasures so you can enjoy them on a daily basis.  Hang artwork on the walls and choose paint and fabric that is pleasing to both of you.

Follow these simple guidelines to create a master bedroom retreat that is a respite from the hustle and bustle that surrounds you.
