Home Office Furniture: Designing With Style and Efficiency

Your home office décor might actually make you less productive. That is bad news when you consider that more and more people are either taking their work home part-time or even working remotely full-time.  The good news is it doesn’t take much thought to makeover your home office to reflect both inspiring style and better productivity.

Like most of the interior design projects we undertake, the first step is to identify your home office activities. For example, are you on the computer a lot requiring an ergonomic chair, spacious desk, and adequate lighting? Do you do a lot of conference calling, requiring lots of privacy? In addition, working at home might mean the presence of children who might pop in and out during your at home workday.

Now make sure the space in your home you will be carving out as your home office can accommodate your list of needs. This includes enough power outlets and telephone jacks to meet your needs.

Next, you will most likely need a desk. We suggest an “L”-shaped desk that can fit snugly in any wall corner. We highly recommend swivel-style chairs that will give you 360 degrees access to all the work essentials around you like the fax machine, phone, printer, and computer.

In addition, a comfortable, ergonomic desk chair might be a larger investment but will be better for your back’s health especially if you plan to work long hours. Furthermore, if you do plan to keep those hours, a desk lamp for sufficient task lighting is a must as well as general room lighting preferable with a dimmer.

Last but not least, you will need plenty of storage to keep your home office from looking cluttered. Modular storage furniture works the best and are available in many sizes and shapes to fit your changing needs and style. These include shelves, cubes, and cabinets.

You can, of course, find all the pieces to set up your home office at one of Hickory Furniture Mart’s manufacturers. Now, unlike at your old workplace, feel free to personalize your home office with your favorite art, framed photographs, and collectibles. After all, your home office is still part of your home. Do you feel adding personal touches to your workspace at home can be distracting?
