You may have noticed that decorating magazines are full of pictures of rooms featuring clear furniture known as acrylic or Lucite furniture. But you may be asking yourself “What is Lucite and is it the same as acrylic and how am I going to use it in my home?”
What is Lucite?
Lucite is the brand name for a clear, acrylic resin material that has been around since the early twentieth century. It was originally used for commercial purposes but became a popular costume jewelry and home décor item in the 50’s and 60’s. This clear material appears in wall sconces, chairs, benches, tables, lamp bases and other home accessories. It is often detailed with metal or combined with wood for an interesting mix. In 2002 designer Philippe Starck designed the iconic Ghost Chair. This clear acrylic chair is available in many fun styles that mimic Baroque and Renaissance furniture styles or you can choose the understated original design with its armless profile and rounded back. While clear Lucite is popular it is also available in colors such as black, smoky gray and bright primary colors.
How can I use Lucite in my decorating?
The clear nature of acrylic or Lucite allows it to practically disappear in a room. This makes it a great choice for a small space that may appear crowded when furnished with solid pieces. For example, a Lucite coffee table will take up very little visual space yet still provide a spot for books, glasses, and collectibles. In keeping with today’s eclectic design trend, combine a distressed wood table with Lucite “ghost” chairs for a very unique look. Fabric chair covers can always be added for additional comfort and color.
And for those homeowners interested in creating an eco-friendly home, Lucite requires no cutting down of trees, no toxic glues are used and it can be recycled down the road.
