Living Room Furniture: Spice things up by mixing patterns

Mixing patterns on furniture is a lot like putting an outfit together – you need to feel comfortable with the overall look.  Many of us become uncomfortable when trying to pull together the perfect mix of patterns in a room, fearing we will do it incorrectly.  With just a few simple ground rules, plan a trip to our North Carolina furniture outlets and showrooms so our designers can assist you in selecting the perfect combination.

The key to mixing up your living room is in the scale of the pattern – a large scaled floral, for example, may be the starting point as it carries the most weight.  Adding a linear, medium scaled stripe or plaid, will balance.  From there you may want to include a small print –something geometric.  A textural, solid fabric will help ground everything.  There are no steadfast rules to follow, but everything must harmonize in the room.

Find a common color theme with each fabric to keep them connected.  If blue is the main color in the room, then at least two of the major fabrics needs to contain the shade.  Add in contrast colors that blend well with the overall scheme for a successful plan.

The interior designers at Hickory Furniture Mart love to put together patterns and colors.  Bring in your layouts so that they can ensure all the colors and patterns flow from room to room.    If you have a piece of artwork that inspires your color scheme, be sure to bring it in as well so they can find just the right combination.
