When we last made much ado about bookshelves, we were able to reduce and organize our book stacks, added some other items like CDs and magazines to share space on our shelves, and found bookshelves to fit our space, style, and needs. With our new bookshelves now setup at home, we now turn to organizing them and accessorizing them to show off their own style, look their best, and even tell a story of who you and your household are.
Naturally, we will start with our books. We prefer hardcover editions of books because they look great on bookshelves while paperbacks are better suited for your nightstand and closed cabinets. When arranging your hardcover books, you have a choice of stacking them horizontally and vertically. For a horizontal design, put the larger-sized books at the bottom and the shorter books up top. However, alternate each horizontal pile so they aren’t so humdrum. For example, when working with multiple shelves, you can group tall and short books in their own organized piles following the same rule. Keep the tall pile on the bottom shelves and short pile on the top shelves.
When arranging books vertically, keep the books’ spines facing out so you can easily read the titles. You can stagger the arrangement of tall and short books to make them feel dynamic. Just make sure you keep them messy and uncluttered even when taking this liberty. Once again, it is best to keep your larger books on the bottom shelves and smaller books on top.
Another way to arrange books that is quickly gaining popularity is to arrange books by color. This will turn your bookshelves and this section of your home into its own splash of color. To do this, begin by organizing your stack of books by color. Groupings can include warm colors (red, brown) and cool colors (blue, white). Afterwards, you can further organize each shelf by hue (i.e. ice blue with sky blue). When doing the latter step, make the transitions of color apparent.
Once you’ve organized your books to your aesthetic satisfaction, it is time to accessorize and personalize your bookshelves.
Now that you have finished organizing your bookshelves, what type of accessories like objects de arte, frames, candlestick holders, and decorative boxes, among many others, will you be incorporating to personalize your bookshelves?
