The bed is truly the focal point in any bedroom. It’s most likely the largest piece of furniture in the room and the first thing you see when you walk in. Any one of these unique headboards will make a statement in a master bedroom, child’s room or guest room.
Unique Headboard Ideas
- An old wooden door can be attached to the wall to create an interesting headboard. You can choose to paint it to match your décor. Or if it has interesting carvings and markings, leave it as is. Even a paneled door from the home improvement store can be used. Replace the panels with padded fabric inserts or paint them in unique color combinations. A standard door is about 80” tall and a standard king bed is about 76” wide. A perfect match!
- Hang a tapestry, quilt or fabric panel from a curtain rod high above the bed. This serves a dual purpose of acting as a headboard and as artwork.
- An upholstered headboard is an easy DIY project. Cut a piece of plywood into the desired shape, apply batting with a staple gun, stretch the fabric of your choice tightly over the batting and staple to the back of the headboard. Then attach braid, gimp or nail heads as trim and voila! You have a custom upholstered headboard.
- For children, paint the inside of a wooden headboard with chalkboard paint. This provides the perfect spot for goodnight messages, prayers, silly drawings or reminders of tomorrow’s schedule. Your kids will love it.
- There is something magical about old iron gates and doors. They seem to have so many stories to tell. Scout your local salvage shops for one that fits your bedroom style and simply attach it to the wall. Very romantic!
- Here’s a bonus idea. Place old shutters or a folding screen behind your bed. It will act as a headboard and add dimension and architectural interest to an ordinary room.
These are just a few ideas. Let creativity and personal style be your guide when choosing a headboard.
