Your home’s master bedroom should reflect the taste of the homeowners and set the precedent for the style of all other rooms. Unlike the guest bedroom and kid’s bedrooms, the master bedroom is usually the least visited room by outsiders because it is considered the most personal. As a result, less thought is often put into decorating it. However, you will be spending a lot of time in your master bedroom (we sleep 1/3 of our lives) so you should make it equally comfortable and functional with the right furniture mix.
The first step is taking detailed measurements of the space to carry around with you when shopping for furniture. You should draft a quick floor plan sketch of the space that you are interested in furnishing. Our online room planner can also help you think about how you would like to organize the space.
Once you’ve identified the space you will be working with, it is time to think about functionality and what furniture you need to carry out the various activities you do in the master bedroom. Of course, sleeping is foremost so you need a bed. Other things that come in mind are chests and dressers for your clothes, jewelry, and linens. Dressers and chests also provide open surface areas for TVs and stereos if you are lacking for space.
If entertainment is big on your list of bedroom activities, we also suggest converting an armoire or wardrobe into a shared space for your TV, garments, and other personal items.
You will also want a nightstand within easy access from your bed to rest a lamp on, an alarm clock, and the paperback you’ve been devoted to every evening. We do prefer nightstands with at least one drawer or more since you can never have too much storage space to keep the room looking uncluttered.
For smaller master bedrooms especially, adding a mirror will subsequently add more space or at least the illusion of it. Mirrors can go on top of the dresser so make sure your mirror measurements match up with the bureau base.
As for your all-important bed (we think so), make sure it will fit whoever will be sleeping in it. We do strongly recommend accessories like duvets, covers, and matching sheet sets. Make your bed an inviting sanctuary at the end of your day. Decorative pillows will also make your bed the perfect place to lounge and read that book on your nightstand.
When shopping for master bedroom furniture, make sure to consult your floor plan and measurements to make sure all the pieces fit not only in style but size.
