How To: Dining Room Furniture for Entertaining

While the living room, family room, and even the patio (for summer BBQs) are the first places that usually come to mind when we think about entertaining guests, the dining room actually plays an integral space for our family and friends to get together. Therefore, when decorating your dining room, not only should it reflect elegance but be inviting as well.

First, decide on the style of room you envision. Whether traditional or contemporary, this room should fit the overall style set by the rest of your house. While it is okay to make each room unique and indeed each room from bedroom to dining room has its own one-of-a-kind function, there still needs to be continuity from room to room.

Every dining room requires the essential element of a dining table where friends and family will carry out the room’s primary purpose: dining.  Therefore, make sure the table you choose can accommodate your family plus guests.  While round tables are perfect for square-shaped rooms, allowing free movement around it, rectangular rooms call for an elliptical or a square table to be proportionate with the space.

Next, bare walls in a dining room require a focal point. If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace in your dining room, it will make a great focal point for the room. However, framed art or a china cabinet, displaying your best wares can also do a good job.

You might also consider a buffet table not only for its complementary beauty to your dining table but because it is also functional for setting down plates and utensils, freeing up the dining table surface itself for food and conversation.

Finally, use an area rug to add warmth to the dining room. If you do decide on this, use a rug with a patterned design to hide unsightly stains and spills that are expected to occur in this space.
