Shopping for new furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories can be productive and fun if you plan ahead and organize your thoughts and your design materials. To help you get started, consider:
- Make a list of everything you will need to take with you (and check it twice)
- Put together a design plan (even a very simple plan with help)
- Take measurements of all your rooms (even ones you don’t think you’ll be shopping for since you never know what you might find)
- Make a diagram with your current furniture layout
- Take photos of your rooms if possible (images that can be seen on your digital camera will work)
- Create a small design board or folder with fabric swatches, wallpaper and flooring samples
- Collect your favorite magazines pictures of rooms you love or products you think you can’t live without
- Go online and see photos and descriptions of some of the products available (write down names and item numbers or print the page for things you’d like to see)
- Make note of all the questions you would like to ask
