How To Choose The Right Rug For Your Home

Rugs provide a focal point and a sense of warmth in every room. They can also improve the overall cleanliness of your home. Most often, the design of a room starts with the rug.  From there you are able to choose coordinating wall colors, pillows and accessories. Our design experts suggest that you take the following factors into consideration when deciding which rug will best suit your needs and your home:

Color

First – consider its color. The rug should have a palette that works with the rest of your home, with its background color setting a tone for the room. The pattern of the rug is a close second. Rugs may either offer a soft statement or a bold look, depending on the pattern.

Size

People often wonder what size rug is best to use in each room. There is no hard set rule because it really depends on your own personal preference, the size of your space and ultimately the size of your furniture. But as a general rule, with a dining room setting, most rug professionals will advise you to select at least an 8 x 10 rug for a table that does not include any leaves and is accompanied by six chairs. If you own a table with one leaf and eight chairs, you will need a rug that is approximately 9 x 12. A table with two leaves and ten chairs usually requires at least a 10 x 14 rug. The table and all of its chairs should sit completely on the rug with the chairs pushed in or pulled out.

If you have a larger living room or family room, you may need a larger than average rug, but each space is completely unique. Most of the time, you will want the front legs of your sofa or sectional to sit at the edge of your rug. You do not want to cover up your rug with furniture since it should remain the focal point that pulls everything else together in your room. Read our guide on utilizing area rugs in your home.

Style

There are area rugs for every budget, with options in machine made, hand-tufted, or hand-knotted. For many, buying an area rug is similar to buying a piece of art. You are often drawn to the colors and textures that are significant to you and your lifestyle. It is important to find a rug that satisfies your design needs and matches your personal style preferences.
