What’s Old Is New Again: Balancing Traditional Furniture and Contemporary Furniture

You have no doubt heard the phrase “everything old is new again”.  Well, that certainly holds true when it comes to furniture design. Wing chairs are getting a modern makeover since they are no longer needed to protect us from drafts; reupholstering existing pieces is fashionable now and turning vintage industrial items into functional furniture results in interesting and unique accent pieces for your home.

Another way to incorporate something old into your interior design would be to take a vintage piece of equipment, like a 1900’s furniture cart, and turn it into a coffee table.  The original, over-sized casters make it possible to move this piece out of the way to make room for party guests or transfer it to another spot in your home.

Vintage industrial stools can be found in all shapes and sizes; as well as being backless, tall, short, swivel.  They will add character and a sense of history to any kitchen or family room.

For those interested in creating a “green” home, the idea of repurposing and reusing old items certainly falls into the green category.  Your “vintage” couch or chair can be made “new” again when reupholstered with a trendy fabric.

These ideas and unique pieces are so versatile and will add an interesting bit of history to any design style to your home be it through the addition of traditional furniture or sleek and contemporary.
