Fall In Love with Yellow this Season

Open up any of the new decorating magazines that are hitting the shelves right now and you will see one consistent color showing up for fall:  yellow.  This optimistic hue is turning up everywhere.

Bold yellows are paired with neutrals in bedrooms to create a feeling of happiness and tranquility.  The new neutral “greige” or gray beige has a lovely effect when combined with yellow, calming down the acidy undertone.  When you visit the bedroom furniture stores at Hickory Furniture Mart, be prepared to be impressed by how usable this combination is with most bedroom groupings.

Picture a background of soft whites and gray tones for bedding with a very subdued palette throughout the room.  A softly quilted matelasse fabric anchors the bedding and features layers of shams and pillows.  Mixing soft geometric or Asian inspired floral patterns amongst the pillows complements the flow of gray tones.

The “wow” factor comes from the injection of yellow right next to the gray, in the form of unexpected pattern combinations.  A random flower might be thrown into the pattern repeat, highlighting exuberant imagery.  Using a spark of yellow gives almost a yin-yang effect with the pull of playfulness against sophistication.

Bedrooms are a perfect place to try out a new color combination, and adding yellow is easy if you already have the neutral palette as a backdrop.  Simple pleated drapery panels or throw pillows are inexpensive ways to update your look.  Try a bolder pattern on your windows with long panels – the yellow and gray pattern can weave in and out of the folds for a more restrained effect.

You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to mix yellow with other colors such as lavender and soft blues.  The hot contrast against a cool background allows for a refreshingly modern update to any room, regardless of your style of furniture.
