Natural Wood Decor & Raw Edges

living room with wing chairs and sofa 20092099Do you long for an updated, yet classic home interior? Try incorporating natural wood decor and raw edges. The rustic materials will instill a sense of outdoor opulence, while also creating a design aesthetic that’s authentic and cozy. Easy to utilize, introduce natural wood and raw edges in the form of architectural elements.

Walls

Walls are a great place to incorporate texture. Associated with antique spaces, exposed brick can morph an everyday wall into a decorative focal point. If brick isn’t an option, consider wood paneling. This design technique can be used in a number of ways to create depth and decorative appeal. When determining how to use wall-paneling, consider the size of the space. A smaller room might be better accented by a single paneled wall, while a larger room could potentially handle a four-wall approach. Similarly, consider ceiling height. Floor-to-ceiling panels can accentuate high ceilings, yet can have an opposite effect on a space with a lower ceiling. If that’s the case, consider an alternate application in the form of wainscoting, which is only applied to a wall’s bottom half.

Ceilings

Ceilings are another ideal place to incorporate natural wood. Paneling is always an option, but as an alternative, consider incorporating beam-work. Left in an unfinished form, beams are also a great way to tie in the raw edge effect. Adding this element can tie a room together, create interest and effectively define open spaces. Spatially speaking, keep in mind the beams’ width and density. While a small room might be overwhelmed by tree trunk-like beams, a huge room would be equally inappropriate for tree twig-like variations.

Flooring

Flooring is, by far, the most popular use for wood, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t options. Rather than traditional hardwood flooring, opt for a burl or reclaimed alternative. Burl wood is a highly sought after variation that’s actually formed by non-uniform growth, resulting in an organic kaleidoscope of unique patterns. Reclaimed wood, exactly as it sounds, is wood that’s been salvaged from old structures. Like burl wood, its beauty is created in its aged random imperfections. Or, you can exchange wood flooring for a raw edged alternative, like brick or slate. Interchanging flooring materials between rooms is an excellent way to create a distinct home environment.
