Carolina Coastal Design

If you are lucky enough to live on or near the shore then you already know how comfortable and inviting Carolina coastal design can be.  It includes beautiful furnishings and a relaxed look surrounded by the wonderful sights and smells of the sea.  If you do not live near the ocean, you are in luck. It is not hard to recreate this look in a home in the city or the suburbs.

Searching for inspiration?  Just take a look at your surroundings. You will find the blue of the sky and water, tan and beige in the sandy beaches, pinks, lilacs and yellow in seashells, crisp white waves and clouds and graying driftwood.  Not to mention the colorful items found on the beach such as umbrellas, toys, beach chairs.

Coastal design can be simple and sophisticated:

  • Crisp white slipcovers
  • Contrasting dark furniture finishes on end tables, chair frames etc.
  • Driftwood gray furniture
  • Brass accents
  • Natural accessories like driftwood, seashells, coral etc.
  • Muted shades of green, blue, tan and coral used in paint and fabric
  • Multiple textures including sisal, wicker, linen, and chenille
  • Dark wood flooring covered with elegant sisal rugs

Coastal design can also be bright and cheerful:

  • Denim and ticking on upholstery or slipcovers
  • White and/or painted furniture
  • Whimsical and colorful accessories reminiscent of the ocean lifestyle such as weather vanes, boat oars, sea life etc.
  • Bright shades of red, white, blue, yellow and aqua used in fabric and paint
  • Painted wood floors with colorful rugs to catch the sand
