Geometric Design Trends: A Simple Equation

It’s back to math class with the new geometric trends in fabric and accessories. You’ve probably seen it everywhere; on dishware, fabrics, artwork, wall coverings and home accessories. Some of the more common designs are listed below:

Fretwork

Fretwork is a cutout design commonly found on wood items.  An intricate, almost lacey pattern is cut using a fretsaw or coping saw.  This design idea can now be found on ceramic lamp bases, fabrics, bedding and wall coverings.  It will add a light and airy touch to your rooms.

Quatrefoil

Geometric Upholstery

Quatrefoil literally means “four leaves” and can be traced back to ancient cultures.  It resembles a chubby four leaf clover but, when turned in the right direction, also resembles a cross.  For this reason it is often used as a symbol for Christianity.  Native Americans believed the four leaves represented the four ends of the earth—north, south, east and west and others believe that the symmetry of the pattern symbolizes harmony.

Today this unusual shape can be found on mirrors, picture frames and outdoor fountains as well as on upholstery, linens and accent pillows.

Chevron

A chevron is an inverted “v” shape that, when strung together, creates a zigzag effect.  This graphic pattern is best used on large surfaces such as draperies, bedding and wall treatments.

Trellis

Trellises, most commonly associated with the stands that hold up plants and vines in the garden, are very popular in home decorating right now. This openwork design has found its way onto fabrics, bedding, wall coverings and accessories. They can add a feeling of fresh air to a breakfast room, sunroom, master bedroom, or even a nursery.

As you can see, these geometric patterns are not new; they have just been introduced into design in new ways.  You can instantly update any room in your home with one of these bold patterns.
