Using Contemporary Design in Your Home

You know that feeling you get when you walk into one of those super chic boutique hotels? You might wonder, “How can I possibly create such a cool look in my own home and make it livable at the same time?” It’s as easy as knowing the process. A contemporary space, whether it’s mod and sparse or a little softer and full of clean lines, is not just about having a great architect. What you put in the space matters, too. There are many great options for those of us who crave the sleek and updated look of contemporary.

There are some factors to keep in mind to prevent your space from feeling cold. The stark look is a completely different design style, known as “minimal.” A soft contemporary space is easy to achieve by a few simple additions. Try including elements such as a luxe throw, or woven shades opposed to wood or metal blinds. In most cases, the use of solid colors with differing textures (such as a grasscloth wall-covering, or a solid rug with a textural striation) automatically adds a contemporary splash. Modernize walls with sturdy shelves to stack dishes, rather than putting them in cabinets. Or assemble a gallery of black-and-white photos by using the same matting and frame style (in varying sizes) for each image.

Creating that same vibe from the cool hotel is a cinch. Except this time, it has found its way home.
