Some things to consider including are your grandfather’s coin and stamp collections, framed family photos, and trophies and other awards and certificates. When mixed in with your books, collectibles especially add drama and make an impact. On the other hand, photographs add a sense of continuity particularly if they are family photographs.

When personalizing your bookshelves with accessories, you need to maintain a careful balance of color, shape, size, style, and theme.

For example, the colors of your accessories should blend in with the rest of its surroundings as mismatched accessories would look too cluttered and busy.

As for shape, if you do decide to go with stacking your books horizontally, add a simple, curvy object to top it like a seashell or bowl to distinguish from the squareness and straightness of the book stack. One simple accessory will make your shelf less bland.

By varying the heights of vertically organized books or alternating the sizes of horizontally stacked ones, you make your shelves more dynamic. Subsequently, different-sized accessories will also add depth by putting larger accessories behind smaller ones such smaller picture frames in front of larger ones.

Furthermore, the style you set for your entire room or house should dictate whether the accessory belongs or not. To illustrate, a framed abstract print would look out of place in a cozy country décor even if only on your bookshelf.

Finally, you can be thematic about choosing your accessories. For example, a shelf dedicated to your books about the sea (like “Moby Dick,” “The Old Man and the Sea,” etc.) can also display your model boats while your cookbooks can share shelf space with pasta in jars.

Let your shelves show your true self from your choice of books to your choice of accessories.

We also recommend using more formal accessories for your bookshelves like the ones you can find at one of Hickory Furniture Mart’s furniture showrooms to add a splash of personality in every room of your home.
