With a playful air to their uniformity, stripes are an interesting way to promote order while simultaneously adding an enlivened appeal. Whether traditional or unconventional, stripes are a great way to add interest and further define a space, and they’re easy to incorporate in any design scheme. Check out these simple tips for adding stripes to your space.

Size Matters

If you’re looking for a large-scale approach, walls are the perfect canvas! Getting started, consider the space. A small room is best suited by thin slightly muted stripes, as broad bold stripes could appear jarring in confined quarters. Oppositely, large spaces pair well with wide stripes, the effect of which is defined and cozy. The same thing is true for upholstery among other applications. A petite pillow would be lost among huge stripes, and an area rug, covered with tiny thin stripes, would appear busy. A general rule of thumb is to keep the size ratio equivalent amongst stripes and applicable-area.

Direction Decision

In addition to size, direction is another aspect of striping keep in mind. Traditionally, stripes are horizontal or vertical in nature. Although equally applicable, each directional category has its own unique attributes. Vertical stripes can give the illusion of height, and are a perfect tool for making a low ceiling seem higher. Horizontal stripes, a trademark of Art Deco design, can have an opposite effect, making a room appear wider and a ceiling seem lower. Although not appropriate in spall spaces, this variation is perfect for adding a cozy retro vibe to an undefined or large space. Rules aside, for an avant garde effect, let stripes take you in whatever direction you see fit (even if it is a little unconventional!)

Choose Your Colors

Regardless of where you choose to introduce stripes, color choice is a fundamental element of success. Most importantly, avoid choosing colors that clash. Due to their side-by-side nature, stripes need to composed of complementary colors or colors from the same family. If Instead, for a harmonious subdued effect, choose complementary colors or colors from the same family. Depending on the effect you’re looking to create, you can make a choice between harmonious monochromatic tones, or opt for a bolder complementary approach. Walls are great for utilizing same family colors, as the effect is soft and soothing, while also visually interesting. However, If you are looking for an eye-catching addition, choose bright complementary colors. For instance, royal-blue and canary-yellow striped throw pillows, would make a bold and beautiful statement against a white sofa or chair.

A Perfect Blend

With an uncapped number of applicable areas, stripes are a multifaceted design tool. To add them into your pre-existing design scheme just keep a few things in mind. If you don’t want the stripe to be the focal point, keep the colors monochromatic or muted. This way the stripe will present a textured facade without calling attention away from other areas. Another aspect to consider is competition. If a room is already pattern-heavy, with florals or other variations, stripes may add confusion instead of creative contrast. To avoid this, incorporate stripes in areas that have a low concentration of pattern. Try a striped window treatment, with solid wall color and floral print accessories. The blend between elements will feel cohesive, while also instilling a homey elegance.

Last Updated Tuesday, October 11, 2011 Stripes are classic, yet modern, and an orderly way to introduce color and contrast into any home interior.
