This will help you choose the correct fabric for your particular project.\u00a0 You will want to take durability, color retention, cleaning requirements and, in some cases, flammability into consideration.\u00a0 This glossary lists some of the more commonly used upholstery fabrics.<\/p>\n<h2>Fabric Glossary:<\/h2>\n<dl>\n<h3>A<\/h3>\n<dt>Acrylic:<\/dt>\n<dd> a man made fabric that is machine washable, dryable and has excellent color retention abilities.<\/dd>\n<h3>B<\/h3>\n<dt>Bamboo:<\/dt>\n<dd> a natural fiber that comes from the pulp of the bamboo plant.\u00a0 It is moisture resistant, and in some cases antibacterial.<\/dd>\n<dt>Barkcloth:<\/dt>\n<dd> a vintage woven cotton fabric often featuring large scaled patterns of leaves, vines and flowers.\u00a0 Think 1940\u2019s Hollywood.<\/dd>\n<dt>Batik:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 a dyed fabric popular in bohemian decorating.\u00a0 The design is covered with wax before dye is applied to prevent the dye from penetrating.\u00a0 (similar to tie dye where the pattern is tied off before dying)<\/dd>\n<dt>Brocade:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 100% cotton, tightly woven fabric with a raised pattern.<\/dd>\n<dt>Burlap:<\/dt>\n<dd>loose weave fabric with a rough texture popular for today\u2019s eco-conscious homeowner.<\/dd>\n<h3>C<\/h3>\n<dt>Chintz:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 a cotton fabric that has been glazed to achieve a shiny surface.\u00a0 Must be dry cleaned to maintain the shine.<\/dd>\n<dt>Crewel:<\/dt>\n<dd> an embroidered fabric that most often features colorful floral designs.<\/dd>\n<h3>D<\/h3>\n<dt>Damask:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 A shiny woven fabric with a reversible design all done in one color.<\/p>\n<h3>H<\/h3>\n<dt>Herringbone:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 a zig zag patterned fabric<\/dd>\n<dt>Houndstooth check:<\/dt>\n<dd> a small check pattern that features 2 colors woven together, most common color combination is black and white.<\/dd>\n<h3>I<\/h3>\n<dt>Ikat:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 a handwoven fabric that has been dyed in the tie-dye fashion.\u00a0 Patterns range from small pin dots to large, exotic shapes.<\/dd>\n<h3>L<\/h3>\n<dt>Linen:<\/dt>\n<dd> a natural fiber that is stronger than cotton and often features a slight sheen.\u00a0 Wrinkles easily but wrinkles are part of the \u201ccharm\u201d of linen.<\/dd>\n<h3>M<\/h3>\n<dt>Microfiber:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 very popular synthetic fabric that mimics the look and feel of natural fiber cloth.\u00a0 Very durable, moisture resistant and machine wash and dryable.<\/dd>\n<h3>N<\/h3>\n<dt>Nylon:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 synthetic fiber with excellent strength, durability and abrasion resistance.<\/dd>\n<h3>P<\/h3>\n<dt>Pleather:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 a synthetic leather<\/dd>\n<h3>R<\/h3>\n<dt>Rayon:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 natural fiber that is soft and drapeable<\/dd>\n<h3>S<\/h3>\n<dt>Suede:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 a brushed or napped leather<\/dd>\n<h3>T<\/h3>\n<dt>Toile:\u00a0<\/dt>\n<dd> A patterned fabric that often depicts farm or country scenes.\u00a0 Commonly uses two colors with black and white being the most popular.<\/dd>\n<h3>V<\/h3>\n<dt>Viscose:<\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0 a form of rayon that has a soft hand.<\/dd>\n<p>Many fabrics will offer a blend of fibers to add strength, durability, color retention and ease of maintenance to natural fibers.\u00a0 Selecting the correct fabric will save you time and money down the road.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to purchasing furniture or upholstery fabric there are so many options available that at times it can seem overwhelming. \u00a0For this reason, it is important to have a working knowledge of the pros and cons of the different types of fabric.
