You\u2019ve probably seen it everywhere; on dishware, fabrics, artwork, wall coverings and home accessories. Some of the more common designs are listed below:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fretwork<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fretwork is a cutout design commonly found on wood items.\u00a0 An intricate, almost lacey pattern is cut using a fretsaw or coping saw.\u00a0 This design idea can now be found on ceramic lamp bases, fabrics, bedding and wall coverings.\u00a0 It will add a light and airy touch to your rooms.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Quatrefoil<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1516 size-medium\" title=\"Geometric Upholstery\" src=\"http:http:\/\/hickoryfurniture.blogs.eprevue.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/108\/2011\/03\/2010-12-15_09-42-21_947-e1299617716674-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"Geometric Upholstery\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quatrefoil literally means \u201cfour leaves\u201d and can be traced back to ancient cultures.\u00a0 It resembles a chubby four leaf clover but, when turned in the right direction, also resembles a cross.\u00a0 For this reason it is often used as a symbol for Christianity.\u00a0 Native Americans believed the four leaves represented the four ends of the earth\u2014north, south, east and west and others believe that the symmetry of the pattern symbolizes harmony.<\/p>\n<p>Today this unusual shape can be found on mirrors, picture frames and outdoor fountains as well as on upholstery, linens and accent pillows.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Chevron<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A chevron is an inverted \u201cv\u201d shape that, when strung together, creates a zigzag effect.\u00a0 This graphic pattern is best used on large surfaces such as draperies, bedding and wall treatments.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Trellis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Trellises, most commonly associated with the stands that hold up plants and vines in the garden, are very popular in home decorating right now. This openwork design has found its way onto fabrics, bedding, wall coverings and accessories.
