Maybe it was a picture in a magazine, your neighbors’ renovation or something from a design show on television. Whatever the particular image is, it’s still just a dream at this point. A dream you’re turn into a reality, but not quite sure how. The first step is to find a place from which to draw inspiration. Perhaps it’s a furniture store, or maybe it’s a gallery that offers Interior Design services. In Western Carolina there are many of both. Once there, seek out something that inspires you. It can truly be anything. Say, for argument’s sake, you choose a two-toned vase. Pull colors from the room from that object. If it’s ivory and navy, take those two colors and lean on them as a guideline.

Once you have the basic scheme outlined, pulling the look together and making a cohesive inviting space that is the envy of all of your friends is not as daunting as it may seem. One key factor to remember in building your room is furniture placement. Be creative. “Float” furniture pieces (rather than placing everything against a wall) in the room to create space dividers. Another idea is to mix up fabrics and textures, which will quickly add depth and dimension. Lastly, don’t forget window treatments. This is one of the most overlooked elements in residential spaces, yet can make such a big difference when applied.

Just have fun with it. Keep it simple, not overworked and fussy. In the end you’ll be floating on your very own cloud.
