First and foremost, you must plan. Start by taking inventory of items you have and want to use, as well as what you need to purchase new. Flip through magazines and pull pictures of spaces you like. Note the scale of your space. Is it a grand room with a two-story open ceiling or is it cozy and tucked away? These things make a difference in the size and style of any selections you may make later on. If you have blueprints or floorplans to bring along, that’s fantastic. Otherwise, you will first want to take measurements. Consider different furniture placement options and the pros and cons of each space planning scheme. Great planning always breeds great design.

Moving on, as you begin to collect samples, use a discerning eye to narrow your choices. For instance, compare the French Blue paint color you like not only to the rug, but also to unsuspecting pieces like a hall chest you might have. If the chest is a neutral toned wood, such as a walnut, the blue is probably a great choice. If the chest is rosewood or cherry, where it presents red undertones, maybe a neutral paint color would complement it better. Keep all samples labeled, as your collection will grow fast!

To be continued…

Last Updated Thursday, February 3, 2011 Interior design is not easy to most.
