A good quality stuffing and filling material can make or break how comfortable your furniture is and how long it will last. There are several different types of stuffing to consider.
Most upholstered furniture pieces are stuffed with upholstery foam. There are several factors to consider when choosing foam.
- Density: The quality of foam used is determined by the density level of the foam; the higher the density number, the better the quality. A high-density foam will not clump or break apart, ensuring a smooth appearance and high comfort level. After all, comfort is obviously the most important factor in any upholstered piece and high-density foam will not sag or sink into the springs when you sit on it. High-quality foam is also more cost-effective as it lasts longer.
- Durability: The durability of foam determines just how much wear and tear it can withstand. Choose foam that has an HR (high resiliency) rating that will help reduce sagging and clumping.
- Firmness: Firmness is a personal choice. To determine what level of firmness you prefer to check out the Indentation Force Deflection number (ILD) of the foam you have chosen. The numbers range from 6 to 45. Six representing the softest foam.
The type of filling needed is determined by the nature of the upholstery project. An accent pillow, upholstered headboard, and occasional furniture such as ottomans and benches can be stuffed with a lesser quality foam or a foam and batting combination. Larger pieces that are subjected to more wear and tear such as sofas, chairs, mattresses and dining room chairs should be stuffed with a high quality, high-density foam to prolong the life of the furniture and to ensure the desired comfort level.
Other fillers can also be used. For example, the foam may be wrapped with batting to prevent slippage and add to the comfort level. Muslin can encase down and feather stuffing and also prevent those pesky and uncomfortable feathers from poking through. A combination of any of these methods can be used to create a custom comfort level to meet your needs.
Choose the highest quality stuffing you can afford and you will enjoy your upholstered furniture for many years to come.
